Masticating Juicers, also known as Single Gear or Single Auger
The masticating type of juicers use a single gear or auger to chew up the fruits and vegetables. With this “chewing” (masticating) action it breaks ups the plant cells. That action results in more fiber, enzymes, vitamins, trace minerals and phytonutrients to be extracted from the fruits and vegetables than the less efficient centrifugal juicers. The masticating juicers are very capable of juicing almost any fruit or vegetable you throw into it. They have no problem with even the leafy vegetables and grasses.
The Masticating juicers are very versitile type of juicers
Because the masticating juicers operate at a slower speed than the Centrifugal type, they produce less heat and foam. Less foam means less oxidation from the air bubbles. This means a longer, more stable shelf life. You can make a huge batch of juice and it will be fine in the refrigerator for a few days. This makes it easier to create juice at home and take it to work or just have it on hand when you need a pick me up. With my centrifugal juicer I can only make the juice I will be drinking right then because it will oxidate and the nutrition will be lost.

These cool machines not only juice, but can make other things. They can homogenize foods to create baby foods, sauces, pates, nut butters, banana ice cream and fruit sorbet. Some can even extrude pasta and make other starchy things like bread sticks and rice cakes. So you actually get a more versatile appliance with one of these juicers.
UPRIGHT MASTICATING JUICERS
The typical masticating type of juicers are horizontal and take up a little bit of counter space. They now have Upright Masticating juicers which take up less space. These work by first extracting juice through a crushing stage and then before the pulp is ejected it is squeezed dry in a second pressing stage. This results in a very dry pulp and lots of juice extracted. These can juice all the leafy vegetables and grasses just fine as well. This seems to be a nice alternative to the normal masticating juicers.
